Most of us know Hebrews 12:1 or have heard part of it. If you have ever been training for a race then you probably have used it as motivation in your training. This particular verse is used by many individuals to inspire perseverance and strength in their life with Christ. I too, love this verse, but as I was reading it the other day, a new lens began to form.
"Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." - Hebrews 12:1
We read this verse and we say, "YES. Let me run the race you have set before me Lord." We are motivated. We are excited for what is to come, but what we easily miss in this verse is the beginning.
Reread the verse and what do you see?
"Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." - Hebrews 12:1
As I was spending my morning with the Lord, I was mesmerized by this verse. I have read this verse too many times to count. In fact, it is a verse I memorized at a young age and walk with it daily, but as I stared for the first time it looked different. Why was this the first time, I actually allowed the first part of this scripture to sink in. I have heard it, I have said it, I have memorized it, but for the first time I was actually seeing it.
Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles...
In order for us to run the race marked out for us.. we have to throw off everything that hinders. EVERYTHING.
I have found that the my biggest hinderance and distraction in my life is my phone. I recently challenged myself to put my phone away by 9PM and to not touch it until after my time with the Lord in the morning. I charge my phone in another room and its not under my pillow anymore. I am learning to use an actual alarm clock again and regain discipline in my priorities in my life. I have found in the past week:
Challenge: Keep your eyes open when reading scripture you know well. Take your eyes off the area you have already underlined and highlighted and truly read what is in front of you with fresh eyes. Create a new lens for yourself this week and stand in awe at what the Lord will continue to teach you.
Until Next Time,
Jenny

I am learning to use an actual alarm clock again and regain discipline in my priorities in my life. I have found in the past week:
- My sleep has improved greatly
- I actually start my day not overwhelmed with emails or work because I am beginning my day in prayer and reflection in the Word
- I am enjoying reading before bed again because I am not distracted by my phone
- My attention is solely focused on my husband in late night conversations because my phone is not in my hand or by my bed
- And overall I have learned that "The important is rarely urgent and the urgent is rarely important" - Eisenhower
